The Pause Before Yes
One minute between the request and your answer. For the moment “yes” is already on your lips and something tightens inside.
Say: “Give me a minute, I’ll think and get back to you.”
It’s an ordinary sentence. Very generous people say it too. A minute doesn’t cancel anything — it just gives the choice back to you.
This minute is yours
You can simply breathe out slowly with the circle. You don’t need to decide anything yet.

How much can you really give?
How to say no politely — without the guilt
Saying no is rarely hard because we lack the words. The problem is speed: the request lands, and “yes” is out before you’ve noticed whether you want to help or how much you can give. This technique adds one minute between the request and your answer — often enough to respond the way you actually choose.
Ready-to-use phrases
“Give me a minute, I’ll think and get back to you.”
“I can help with this part: [what exactly] — [when]. The rest won’t work for me right now.”
“I can’t right now — I don’t want to promise and then let you down. Can we come back to it [when]?”
“I can help. Let’s pin down what exactly you need and by when — then I’ll get back to you.”
If you feel anxious after saying no
An uncomfortable feeling may stay after you say no — especially if not disappointing people matters a lot to you. It doesn’t mean you did something wrong. You can wait it out without sending a follow-up message. If “yes” comes too easily, see how much time it takes over a year in the What Does My “Yes” Cost? calculator.
How we count
The technique rests on a simple idea from our article: you can leave yourself time between a request and your answer, to tell the wish to help apart from the fear of disappointing someone.
Everything runs in your browser: your numbers and answers are not sent or saved anywhere. Only your chosen currency is remembered on this device.
One step
