How BMI is calculated

Body mass index = weight in kilograms ÷ height in meters squared (or 703 × pounds ÷ inches squared). WHO ranges for adults: under 18.5 — underweight; 18.5–24.9 — healthy range; 25–29.9 — overweight; 30 and above — obesity. For adults they don’t change with age or sex.

the BMI range the WHO considers healthy for adults — the same at any age from 18

What BMI misses

BMI can’t tell muscle from fat or show where fat is carried, and it doesn’t apply during pregnancy or breastfeeding, for athletes or for anyone under 18. The WHO suggests lower cut-offs for people of Asian descent. It’s a starting point for a conversation with your doctor — not a verdict on your health, and never on you.

Waist size adds context: according to the WHO, a waist over 80 cm (31.5 in) in women is linked to increased metabolic risk, and over 88 cm (34.6 in) to substantially increased risk.

If thoughts about food and weight feel heavy

If the number on the scale strongly affects your mood, you restrict food or feel guilty after eating, please talk to a doctor or therapist. In the US, the National Alliance for Eating Disorders offers free support. You deserve care at any size.

How we calculate

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)², or 703 × pounds ÷ inches². WHO adult ranges: < 18.5; 18.5–24.9; 25–29.9; ≥ 30. Waist in women: > 80 cm (31.5 in) increased risk, > 88 cm (34.6 in) substantially increased.
